Agency by Subversive Design
Designed objects and systems are everywhere. Asking critical questions is essential to being sensitive to—and participating responsibly in—the design and construction of our worlds. Questions like: who is represented, what are the power structures, and how am I involved? In this interactive session, participants will (1) engage in hands-on maker-centered activities from the Agency by Design project that encourage the interrogation of design (2) explore elements of subversive design, or design that challenges and disrupts systems of power (3) reflect on connections between the session content and their own teaching and learning contexts. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/ Taking Apart Racism: Using Maker-Centered Practices to Break Down Systems of Oppression
How can building a sensitivity to design empower our students to make change? Join us to learn about ways that maker-centered practices can create opportunities to examine closely, break down, and eventually act on systems of oppression such as racism. In this workshop, we will “take apart” an ordinary object as a means toward understanding the complexity in systems of oppression and the way they are sustained. Participants will leave with practical teaching tools that can be used right away in a classroom setting. Inspiration for this workshop comes from Agency by Design and the Making Across the Curriculum research project. Capacity: 10
