Making the Leap: Transforming Teacher Practice through Maker-Centered Learning
The current landscape of education necessitates opportunities for maker-centered learning that disrupt the traditional classroom. Many educators and school leaders are embracing design and maker-centered learning while also asking important questions about how to infuse maker-centered pedagogies into classroom practice to meet curricular goals. Project Zero’s Agency by Design research team has partnered with the Washington International School (WIS) and a cohort of educators from DC public schools on a project called Making Across the Curriculum—an investigation geared towards developing maker-centered tools and strategies for educators working across the content areas and at every grade level. This plenary session will provide an overview to the Agency by Design framework for maker-centered learning along with an introduction to the Making Across the Curriculum project—including the tools, emergent findings, and select pictures of practice that have emerged from this work.

Participation, Power, and Design: Making Change through Maker-Centered Learning
What are the roles of power, participation, and representation in design and making? What does it mean to be ethically empowered? Project Zero researchers Edward P. Clapp and Sarah Sheya, in collaboration with DC educators have begun exploring these questions through the lens of maker-centered learning. In this session, they’ll take a deeper look at how maker-centered pedagogy can support young people to be ethically empowered and develop a critical sensitivity to the design of objects and systems, particularly systems of power and access. They’ll introduce new Agency by Design tools and share documentation from several different classrooms participating in Agency by Design’s Making Across the Curriculum Project.
