AT CAPACITY/ Maker-Centered Learning in the Math Classroom

This course will focus on a journey to design meaningful making experiences that are tied to Common Core state standards for elementary mathematics. Inspired by the Making Across the Curriculum project, Megan will show how teachers can plan and implement experiences that help students understand that math is not something to simply do, but is in fact something that helps make sense of the world. Participants will dive deeply into two maker-centered learning approaches, engage with Thinking Routines as they design a product, and begin to plan a maker-centered learning experience for their own students. AT CAPACITY/ Makerspace Magic: How to Make Your Makerspace Have High Impact with Low Maintenance!

Workshop facilitator Falon will show attendees how to use Pinterest, their own personal passions, and their students' interest to generate high impact, low prep Makerspace projects for students. Drawing from her own experiences creating a classroom Makerspace, she will guide participants in designing a high-quality Makerspace in their very own classrooms with everyday household/school materials. The workshop will have rotating stations where attendees will be able to (1) Design a mini-Makerspace project using Pinterest; (2) Align projects with appropriate and engaging text(s); and (3) Build an exemplar to take back to their classrooms to jump-start their next Makerspace project. AT CAPACITY/Making As Reflection: Using Making and Agency by Design Ideas to Reflect on Our Practice

As teachers, we find ourselves in the process of making and mending our lessons, materials, and curriculum every day. We tweak slides between classes to clarify information, create a new bulletin board or anchor chart to launch new units with clarity, integrate new routines to shepherd students to higher-level cognitive work, and so much more to ensure deep and meaningful learning occurs in our classes. As Brigid began to redesign her units over the course of the year to include practices she learned through work with Making Across the Curriculum, she found maker-centered practices highly pertinent to her own pedagogical approach. Participants will use Thinking Routines to reflect on their school year and participate in making to consider how they can bring maker-centered practices into their own planning and learning design. How does exploration of design foster deep understanding? What happens when students step into the shoes of makers? In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the protocol Voice and Choice that "encourages looking critically at a piece of content, considering perspectives, and then re-designing or re-imagining that content from one’s own perspective." After an interactive exploration, participants will consider ways the activity can be applied in their own context. Strategies will be differentiated according to participants’ comfort level with Project Zero ideas. No previous experience necessary. This workshop is suitable for all levels and school environments.
