AT CAPACITY/ Maker-Centered Learning in the Math Classroom
This course will focus on a journey to design meaningful making experiences that are tied to Common Core state standards for elementary mathematics. Inspired by the Making Across the Curriculum project, Megan will show how teachers can plan and implement experiences that help students understand that math is not something to simply do, but is in fact something that helps make sense of the world. Participants will dive deeply into two maker-centered learning approaches, engage with Thinking Routines as they design a product, and begin to plan a maker-centered learning experience for their own students. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/ Makerspace Magic: How to Make Your Makerspace Have High Impact with Low Maintenance!
Workshop facilitator Falon will show attendees how to use Pinterest, their own personal passions, and their students' interest to generate high impact, low prep Makerspace projects for students. Drawing from her own experiences creating a classroom Makerspace, she will guide participants in designing a high-quality Makerspace in their very own classrooms with everyday household/school materials. The workshop will have rotating stations where attendees will be able to (1) Design a mini-Makerspace project using Pinterest; (2) Align projects with appropriate and engaging text(s); and (3) Build an exemplar to take back to their classrooms to jump-start their next Makerspace project. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/Making As Reflection: Using Making and Agency by Design Ideas to Reflect on Our Practice
As teachers, we find ourselves in the process of making and mending our lessons, materials, and curriculum every day. We tweak slides between classes to clarify information, create a new bulletin board or anchor chart to launch new units with clarity, integrate new routines to shepherd students to higher-level cognitive work, and so much more to ensure deep and meaningful learning occurs in our classes. As Brigid began to redesign her units over the course of the year to include practices she learned through work with Making Across the Curriculum, she found maker-centered practices highly pertinent to her own pedagogical approach. Participants will use Thinking Routines to reflect on their school year and participate in making to consider how they can bring maker-centered practices into their own planning and learning design. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/Using Design Thinking Routines Across Disciplines
How does exploration of design foster deep understanding? What happens when students step into the shoes of makers? In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the protocol Voice and Choice that "encourages looking critically at a piece of content, considering perspectives, and then re-designing or re-imagining that content from one’s own perspective." After an interactive exploration, participants will consider ways the activity can be applied in their own context. Strategies will be differentiated according to participants’ comfort level with Project Zero ideas. No previous experience necessary. This workshop is suitable for all levels and school environments. Capacity: 10

Problem Solving Through Collaborative Design
As educators, we all have burning questions about practice. In this design challenge workshop, Ashley, the facilitator, will ask participants to name a burning question about their practice or an issue in their school. Each participant will receive a problem from another participant (not their own). They will then engage in a making activity to design an approach to resolving the problem presented to them. Capacity: 10

Thinking from a Design Perspective
In this workshop, we will explore design through a take-apart activity. Participants will take apart a given object and will engage in the maker move of Looking Closely using the Thinking Routine Parts-Purposes-Complexities. After documenting our observations, we will explore thoughts and perceptions about design. As a culmination, we will create a design relevant to own subject area. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/ Building for Hurricanes: Mastering Area and Learning Compassion through Making
This course will focus on an eight-week maker project in Quay's classroom focused on natural disasters and the math concept of area. Participants will watch four short videos of structures surviving natural disasters. Then, all will participate in a short comparative area lesson. In a design challenge, we will make a structure that will be tested by a participant-created natural disaster. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/ Exploring Systems: Using Maps to Understand Contemporary Issues
In this course, we will think about communities as systems, using the maker move of Exploring Complexity to look at how Hurricane Maria affected communities in Puerto Rico. Participants will build maps in order to think critically about how parts of a system are connected. We will then look at how this activity was used within a 3rd grade unit of study as a catalyst for student action in the aftermath of the hurricane. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/ Voice, Choice, and Critical Mending
When we try to mend a system, how can we tell a full story? A critical approach to mending can reveal the voices and choices involved in making and breaking a system, while adding a mender's perspective that reimagines a new whole. This hands-on workshop will use Agency by Design Thinking Routines to explore the complexity of broken systems and find opportunity to illuminate their evolution. Capacity: 10

AT CAPACITY/The Joys and Challenges of Making with Adult Learners
Are you an administrator wondering how to introduce making to your faculty? A teacher who would like to engage in maker-centered learning without knowing where to start? Do you want to explore who you are as a maker? Does looking at a piece of Lego make you uncomfortable? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this course is for you! Taking the stance that you can only teach or deeply know what you have experienced yourself, this course will give participants a chance to slow down and explore who they are as a maker, and then collaborate on a design challenge to identify the roadblocks, challenges, and joys of making with adult learners. The course will end with the sharing of various failed, attempted, and successful making practices in an educational context. This session is open to anyone wishing to explore making with staff, teachers, colleagues, and self, and is suitable for all levels. Capacity: 10

Making to Support Language Acquisition
Learning a language is always a challenge, and learners must put themselves at risk in order to speak in another language before they master it. Integrating making in the classroom at various stages of a unit can help make learning a language more attainable, more concrete, and it can help learners better understand the purpose of specific language structures. From using Agency by Design Thinking Routines to making a prototype, Making Across the Curriculum can easily be adapted to the language classroom. Capacity: 10
